When is the start and end of season for high school water polo (SJS-CIF season alignment)?

August – Nov (3 – 4 months) High school season starts 2 weeks after Junior Olympics (Last weekend in July)
First Contest is usually 1 week after school starts (September)
Play-Offs/League Championships are usually late October early November States are the last tournament scheduled for high school

When do teams form and begin to practice?

High school season begins in August after the dead period, which is 2 weeks after JOS Club starts 1-2 weeks after league championships.

Do you need to be an excellent swimmer to play?

Not really, but it does help. Water Polo takes a certain comfortability with being in water. You will be required to wrestle, jump, swim, pass a ball, shoot a ball, and withstand being grabbed. These are already hard skills on land to master. We do it in the water.

How many players are in the pool at once?

For each team, there are 7 players in the pool for each team. 1 goal-keeper and 6 field players

How many players make up a typical HS team?

Usually 8 – 50 players

What should every parent know to enjoy the game as a spectator?

The Advantage Rule:
“The Advantage Rule”: Rule WP7.3 reads “The referees shall refrain from declaring a foul if, in their opinion, such declaration would be an advantage to the offending player’s team.” Simply put, a foul won’t be called (likely away from the play on the ball) if it takes a chance at a probable goal away from the offense. This rule is completely subjective, and is up for determination by the official. It is good to keep in mind that while there may be disagreements with officials, it is solely the responsibility of the coach to interact with officials.

Is water polo a scholarship sport in college?

Yes, although there is no Division 3.

Are there many adult leagues that play the sport after graduation?

There are alot of leagues. USA water polo hosts Masters Tournaments almost all year. Check
your local clubs to find affiliated masters programs.

What should student players practice at home if we don’t have a swimming pool?

Mobility and stretching, ball handling skills, and watching game film.
